YIXUAN WANG

Welcome to my portfolio website. I am a student of Communication Design at the University of Southampton, and here I shall present the outcomes of my first semester's studies: the research processes and results of four projects, along with RRR.

PROJECT 3 Quantified SelfThe Studio  Living  Experience

1. Research and  Process:
This project was inspired by my experience working in the studio. The environment was exceptionally quiet, yet I was suddenly plagued by the incessant hum of the refrigerator's electrical current. This incessant noise made me feel irritable and unable to concentrate on my studies. Consequently, I began observing the studio's ambient sounds. I realised that living alone did not necessarily guarantee tranquillity, and that these noises could affect both my mood and my wellbeing. I therefore collected a series of data points and recorded them.

2. Brief:
Does  the soundproofing design of modern residences and the noise standards for household appliances genuinely take into account human neurological health?

3. Story:
In Britain, I resided in a studio flat, having chosen it for its perceived tranquillity and lack of disturbance. However, upon moving in, I found myself constantly affected by certain noises, impacting both my mood and heart rate. I observed the sounds within three apartments and monitored my emotional state and heart rate in response to these three distinct noises.

4. Reflection:
Does the soundproofing design of modern residences and the noise standards for household appliances genuinely take into account human neurological health? During my research, I recorded each of these three noise sources separately and continuously monitored my heart rate and mood changes over three weeks whenever these noises occurred. All data was recorded by my Apple Watch. I visualised these charts into three posters. For instance, on the fire alarm page, I designed heart rate as triangles and circles, representing calm and elevated states respectively.
I intend to display these posters in studio-style apartments. People choose studios for their quietness, yet why should poor soundproofing cause physical discomfort and emotional distress? This is a matter worthy of consideration.
